SHIFT @ Cobalt Promo Mix

I did this mix in June before I played the high energy SHIFT party at Cobalt. It's more of a dancey vibe than the hip hop I'm usually spinning. Had a blast playing that party for sure!

Enjoy :)

Ten Favorite Party Tracks

So Gwyneth Paltrow has this blog/website GOOP which I normally don't read but my girl Liz sent me a really neat blog post from this past week. Gwyneth asked a bunch of music-industry people like DJs, producers, artists, etc to submit their top 10 party tracks. It kinda puts together the ideal summer party soundtrack. I read the first paragraph and without looking at each person's list, came up with my list. I then read everyone's lists and compared notes.

Check out the blog post on GOOP here.

Here's my top ten favorite party tracks.

1. Kid Cudi - Day n Nite (Crookers Remix)
2. INXS - Need You Tonight
3. Luscious Jackson - Naked Eye
4. DiVinyls - I Touch Myself
5. Bon Jovi - Living on a Prayer
6. Mobb Deep - Quiet Storm Remix ft. Lil' Kim
7. Chemical Brothers - Galvanize
8. Pet Shop Boys - West End Girls
9. Prodigy - Breathe
10. John Dahlback - Blink

So from April 2005 to June 2007 I put together monthly hip hop mixtapes, only missing a couple months due to the holidays and such. This was before my DJing days so nothing was mixed, just one song blended into the other for the most part. Somehow after I started getting more and more into DJing my mixes slowed down. I put one out every few months and haven’t done so for about 8 months at this point. I got more focused on electro for a while and when I would finally put out a mix, DJs would critique every little aspect of it to the point that I didn’t find any fun in it anymore. Sure, I loved making mixes, but was almost afraid to upload them because of all the negative feedback some of my peers were giving me, most of which was just ridiculous hating.

I’ve made almost a mix a month since I uploaded my last one but the only people who have heard them are those who have ridden in my car or the few I burned copies for. For the past 8 months, while my friends have been nagging and nagging (not in a bad way) for a new mix, I finally have realized why I make mixes. I make them so friends like Katie and Liz can rock out to some awesome hip hop music like I do every time I get in my car. I’m not making these mixes for DJs to listen to (although don’t mind those who do ;) ), I’m making them for people to have fun, dance, smile, and enjoy themselves to some new hip hop music.

So I’d like to restart my monthly mixtape series. New hip hop I’ve found through various methods, silly names for the mixes, fun photos of me on the covers, and good stuff for my friends. Of course, I’ll still take any critique that comes my way and will always improve through each mix I make, but the most important part of all of this is having FUN.

Enjoy this mix. Holler.

Interviewed for DC City Paper!

Great things have happened in 2009. KIDS is taking off. Level Up is gonna be huge. Thanks to all the great people who have supported me and my dreams throughout the past year. I couldn't have done it without all of you.

City Paper Article

Ellen Lovelidge, KIDS/Level Up

“At the beginning of 2008 I felt like the dance scene in D.C. was a culture of cliques. There are so many great dance parties in this city, and 12 months ago they all seemed so separate. Everyone had their group of friends and DJs they followed and hardly ventured away from that comfort zone. During the course of the year I feel
like all of the cliques have gradually intertwined and the whole dance and DJ community has come together as one fun-loving group. The promoters and DJs all seem to have the same goal: to throw an amazing party and make sure your audience as a whole has a blast.”

As DJ Lil’ El (lilel.blogspot.com), Lovelidge helps promote KIDS, a hip-hop dance night at DC9, and Level Up, a new electro night at the Red Lounge Bar & Grill.
