One of the greatest and unique minds took his life at the age of 67 yesterday, February 20, in his home near Aspen. He died from a gun-shot wound to the head and was found soon after by his son, Juan. His wife had left the house just before the death. It is not yet known if a note was found, however his death was said to be preplanned after his recent severe health problems including a broken leg and hip replacement. Being a lover of guns, his wish was always to have his remains blasted out of a cannon after his death. It is not yet known if this will take place.

Thompson was best known for his type of journalism described by himself as "gonzo journalism," where the writer makes themselves a large part of the story. Many remember him as the author of the book and popular movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. This story was written in 1972 about a crazy trip Thompson had taken to Las Vegas involving the use of many intoxicants.

Here are some links to remember him by:

Buy some books

Great site on everything HST.

The most recent article he wrote for Rolling Stone magazine, on the 2004 election.

A neat article by Salon.com on HST including sound clips.

Another article, less formal, more enertaining, than the one above.

Pictures of HST.

"america...just a nation of two hundred million used car salesmen with all the money we need to buy guns and no qualms about killing anybody else in the world who tries to make us uncomfortable"

"i hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me"

"the edge...there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over"

rest in peace.
